IT Operations Analytics

With its new IT Operations Analytics (ITOA) business unit amasol picks up a subject that market analysts such as Gartner consider to be one of the key subjects for the next years when it comes to the successful operation of complex heterogeneous IT environments.

These IT environments in particular impose ever higher requirements for the application support and IT operations teams. It will no longer be sufficient to simply manage the performance and availability of IT services. Expectations are that IT will be able to prove a (as positive as possible) impact of these services on the company’s overall business results.

In addition, mission-critical IT services are more often designed as loosely coupled applications that run on both physical and virtual infrastructures. For this reason, it will get more difficult to monitor the overall service and to minimize performance problems that may impact the business process.

As a consequence, there are calls for a transforming analysis-driven approach for service performance management supporting enterprises in:

  • Visualising the state of mission-critical applications and their impact on end user experience as well as the business processes,
  • Isolating performance problems across IT silos to reduce the average time to resolution and the time IT staff has to spend for “crisis talks”,
  • Focusing proactively on service performance abnormalities before they get out of control and impact the business.

The key drivers for IT Operations Analytics solutions come from a wide variety of challenges such as:

  • Volume of data
    Modern IT performance and availability management systems today provide a wealth of information that IT operation teams can hardly manage anymore.
  • Complexity
    Complexity becomes the new normality. The IT department has so much to do with monitoring application performance and availability that it does not find the time to answer the really important business-relevant questions.
  • Dynamics
    IT environments include an increasing number of single devices and components that relatively independent from each other are subject to changes. Each of these changes by itself can impact the performance and availability of the overall system. The IT department has to be able to proactively detect these impacts and manage them.

Linking ITOA with modern APM solutions provides an important insight into application usage and offers the base for a variety of operations efficiency improvements.

Gartner for example forecasts that in the year 2015 60 percent of the global-2000 companies will put a higher priority on ITOA. In 2012 it were only 20 percent.

The analytics technology may be used in almost any IT management discipline. At the moment, we see major user scenarios in the following areas:

  • Root Cause Investigation: Accurate detection of so far unknown causes for the malfunction of the overall system,
  • Prioritise Service Issues by Business Value (Service Impact Analysis): Identification and classification of an alert’s business impact to assign error resolution resources in a timely and efficient manner,
  • Proactive Control of Service Performance and Availability: Forecast of future system status and identification of impacts on the service performance,
  • Problem Assignment: Assignment of occurring problems to the most appropriate IT operations teams for problem solution,
  • Capacity Management: Analysis of current and historic trends and forecast of future scenarios in your interconnected IT environment including cloud-based environments.

ITOA systems are able to process data from a wide variety of different sources. The power of the analysis options will increase with the number of sources. Data should be captured from all existing IT silos. The following data source types are appropriate for analysis:

  • Network data (packets and flows)
  • Machine data (log files and other poly-structured text)
  • Documents
  • Monitoring systems (legacy ITOM)
  • KPIs from proprietary applications (native instrumentation)

Gartner has defined five dimensions of ITOA functionality. At the moment, the available solutions only cover segments of these functionality dimensions:

  • Complex operations event processing
  • Statistical pattern discovery (anomaly detection)
  • Unstructured text indexing, search and inference
  • Topological analytics
  • Multidimensional database analysis
