Dynatrace OneAgent: Why Deployment Matters and Why amasol Gets it Right

In today’s complex cloud-native environments, traditional monitoring approaches fall short, leading to blind spots. Your applications span multiple cloud providers, containers, microservices, and infrastructure layers. However, most monitoring tools force you to choose between detailed visibility and simplicity. Dynatrace OneAgent changes this equation entirely.

what is OneAgent?

When you purchase Dynatrace, the first thing you must do is deploy OneAgent. It’s the core component that collects all the data Dynatrace uses to give you visibility across your environment.

Dynatrace OneAgent is essentially one binary file comprising a set of specialized services that have been configured specifically for your monitoring environment. These services collect metrics on various aspects of your hosts, including hardware, operating system, and application processes.

A single instance of OneAgent can handle monitoring for all types of entities, including servers, applications, services, databases, and more. OneAgent gives you all the operational and business performance metrics you need, from the front end to the back end, such as cloud instances, hosts, network health, processes, and services.

OneAgent discovers all the processes you have running on your hosts. Based on what it finds, OneAgent automatically activates instrumentation specifically for your unique application stack. It also seamlessly injects the necessary tags required for user-experience monitoring into your application pages. This process happens automatically in the browser, meaning you don’t have to manually alter a single line of your source code. New components are auto-instrumented on the fly. Tags like the service name, session ID, and request ID give Dynatrace the context it needs to show exactly what happened, where, and why. This makes the dashboards smarter, which makes querying faster, and root cause analysis smarter and faster.

The hidden Complexity of Agent Deployment

Deploying OneAgent across a real customer ecosystem is anything but simple. When you first look at Dynatrace documentation, agent setup seems straightforward. Download, install, configure, and monitor. In theory, that is true. In practice, the moment you step into a real customer environment, complexity multiplies. Think of a football player practicing free kicks in practice, with no crowd and no pressure. In a game, there are 70,000 people watching, money is on the line, the team standing matters, personal statistics are tracked, the morale of the team is at stake if you miss, and there are coaches who have been training you. Our consultants are game day ready.

Multi-Cloud Architectures

Customers rarely run on a single cloud. Managing OneAgent across AWS, Azure, and on-premises infrastructure requires understanding each platform’s networking, security groups, and deployment models.

Containerized Environment:

Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration platforms introduce their own challenges. Where do you properly inject OneAgent? How do you handle cluster-scoped monitoring? What about sidecars?

Security and Compliance

Data governance policies, network isolation, and security controls mean OneAgent cannot simply be deployed anywhere. It needs to respect firewalls, VPNs, and compliance frameworks unique to an ecosystem.

Integration with Existing Tools

Most enterprises have legacy monitoring, logging, and alerting systems. OneAgent needs to coexist and integrate with these. Without proper implementation, this amazing tool becomes just another tool.

This is where most deployments stumble. Technical teams lack the necessary experience. Consulting engagements become expensive, and customers end up with partial implementations that don’t deliver the promised value.

Configuration Tuning

Out-of-the-box settings rarely work because the modules were made to be broad. Understanding what to monitor, how aggressively to collect data, and how to optimize for cost and performance is both an art and a science that is learned through years of experience.

Where Deployments Really Go Wrong

Incorrect Agent Placement

We often see OneAgent installed on the wrong hosts, which could include jump boxes, bastion hosts, or shared utility nodes, while missing the actual application workloads. Dynatrace will still show and collect the data, but it’s the wrong data. This leads to more data junk that you end up paying to store in the Dynatrace Grail data lakehouse. This unnecessary data consumes your Davis Data Unit (DDU) budget. This means that you are paying effectively paying for visibility that provides zero business value while potentially hitting your license limits before monitoring your most critical services.

Over Instrumentation and Performance Impact

Another common mistake that we see people make is deploying OneAgent everywhere with the idea of “just in case”. On high demand systems or undersized Virtual Machines (VMs), deep instrumentation can introduce real overhead. Dynatrace is low impact but it’s not zero impact. Without proper tuning, it can affect performance during peak load.

Process Detection and Service Mapping Issues

Real world applications do not always follow clean and standard patterns. Custom runtimes, Embedded JVMs, short lived processes, and nonstandard startup scripts can confuse automatic detection. When services are misidentified or grouped incorrectly, the topology will be wrong.

Silent Failures

OneAgent does not fail loudly. It will install, it will connect but key metrics or traces are missing due to version mismatches, unsupported kernels, or network restrictions. Teams assume they’re covered until an outage proves otherwise.

Licensing and Cost Surprises

Auto discovery without proper governance can quickly consume more data than expected, especially in dynamic cloud environments. When OneAgent is deployed too broadly, across noncritical systems, short lived instances, or utility hosts, it dramatically increases data ingestion which increase your monthly cost.

How We’ve Solved this: Real-World Proof

Don’t take our word for it. Here’s what we’ve actually delivered for enterprise customers with complex OneAgent deployments.

Case Study 1: Volkswagen Financial Services

Company: Volkswagen Financial Services (active in 47 countries, 200+ business critical applications)

The challenge: VWFS had a fragmented monitoring landscape with numerous different tools spread across on-premises data center, a private Kubernetes platform Pivotal Container Service (PKS), Microsoft Azure, and AWS. The company needed to consolidate monitoring, gain visibility into a heterogeneous application landscape, and establish governance around monitoring practices.

What we did: amasol led a comprehensive 2021 and 2022 assessment project that included 100+ workshops with technical application managers, business architects, and application owners. We evaluated 70 of VWFS’s 200 business critical applications to understand monitoring requirements across different platforms.

The outcome: VWFS established a monitoring Center of Excellence (CoE) as a central governance hub. We deployed Dynatrace OneAgent across the entire heterogeneous environment and now operate it as a managed service. From fall 2021 through the spring of 2022, we rolled out the Dynatrace cluster, deployed agents, onboarded the central VWFS leasing applications for the German market, and integrated five additional national companies.

Quote from Maik Blecker, Technical Specialist for Availability at VWFS, ” amasol already looked after part of our monitoring landscape at VWFS AG in the past. The old APM solution, which was replaced by Dynatrace AIOps, was also managed by amasol. It therefore made sense to continue benefiting from the solution and operational expertise of our colleagues in the future. We have been working with amasol for several years now, both in projects and in the operation of our monitoring tools, in a professional and cooperative partnership. We benefit from the comprehensive product and project know-how and the close personal cooperation.”

Case Study 2: Schenker

Company: Schenker (72,000 employees, 1,850+ locations in 130 countries, 10 billion euros in annual revenue)

The Challenge: Schenker operates TANGO, a global freight processing platform serving 20,000+ employees across air and sea freight operations. The system operates 24/7/365 with a 99.7% availability target. This specific number is picked on purpose because every minute of downtime costs hard cash. Aircraft take off on tight time slots regardless of cargo status. Traditional monitoring couldn’t provide the end-to-end visibility needed to distinguish between application issues, infrastructure problems, neighboring system failures, or network problems.

What we did: In partnership with Schenker, amasol designed, implemented, and customized a Dynatrace deployment across 100 enterprises critical and business critical applications. We integrated Dynatrace with ServiceNow’s incident management system, enabling automatic ticket generation when critical events occur. We also provided implementation support and a second-level technical support, eventually moving to full managed service operations.

The Real Impact: Schenker’s support teams now detect problems end-to-end, from the user device to backend to neighboring systems. When users complained TANGO was slow, Dynatrace revealed this was subjective perception, not reality. More critically, Dynatrace detected a failing server farm in a neighboring middleware system that could have escalated into a companywide IT crisis affecting multiple critical systems. Without proper end-to-end visibility, this would have caused severe disruption across the entire logistics operations.

Quote from Frank Valdor, Head of Global Operations Management at Schenker, “On the one hand, amasol has been supporting us in the TANGO project from the very beginning, with solutions design, implementation and customization as well as 2nd level support. Since last year, we have also outsourced the entire operation to amasol. When the decision was made to use Dynatrace not only for TANGO monitoring but also as a strategic monitoring platform at Schenker, it was also clear to us that we needed someone to look after the platform and be responsible for troubleshooting. In addition, it was important for us to be able to access many years of solution know-how and project experience in the field of end user experience monitoring and application performance management by working with amasol.”

Rouven Lotze, IT Service Manager Global IT&D Air & Ocean at Schenker, explains the collaboration with amasol, “I have nothing but positive things to say about this collaboration so far. This is basically how I imagine working with vendors. Together, we have managed to overcome all challenges in the past and we therefore assume that we will continue to do so in the future.”
